Color Studies in Philly

I am always excited to push my portrait painting practice. That’s why I signed up for this incredible portrait workshop taught by Kerry Dunn at Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia.

The focus is on color. Kerry shared incredible tips on how to study color relationships. We started with portraits that were not meant to have realistic flesh tones. Instead we picked a color that we noticed on the skin and exaggerated that color. It was so freeing to experiment and mix colors right on the canvas.

Once we went back to flesh tones, this exaggeration helped me see hues better. I am so grateful for this new perspective on color. Now that I have gone out and pushed color to the extreme it doesn’t feel so scary.

This class was also a wonderful reminder for the importance of a strong drawing. I think I’ve been able to get my underpainting done quickly and correctly. Kerry’s reminder to start with a rectangle as an envelope to start a sketch is now a regular practice for me to start all alla prima painting.

I can’t wait to continue to share my knowledge in my alla prima workshops here in Atlantic City as well.
